Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, dwelt a shepherd boy. His being was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the breezes across the single tree on the peak were his main co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plot.
Stories of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One day he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game continued for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of website his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
